When RM Auctions put up Phantom II 9YC the catalogue included the following:-
"Smith & Waddington was incorporated in Camperdown, a suburb of Sydney, in September 1922. The British-born Frank Waddington was a wealthy cinema owner who teamed with Arthur Spurway Smith and Charles Leslie Fairs. Smith and Fairs were accomplished coachbuilders, and the new firm specialised in bodies for imported automobiles. Their work appeared on Wolseley, Hudson, Dort, Essex, Benz, Fiat and Turcat Mery chassis, in addition to Rolls-Royce.

Within a year, propelled principally by Waddington’s son Russell and Smith, Smith & Waddington had expanded to a large new factory. The name Smith & Waddington bespoke quality construction, their bodies, according to a local motoring journal, “win[ning] instantaneous admiration everywhere.” In 1923, they were bodying 85 percent of the Rolls chassis delivered to Australia, and many cars with their bodies were being exported to India and other southeast Asian countries. In 1924 Smith & Waddington added motor bus bodies to their activities and fared well in them for several years. However, competition from volume body companies like Holdens and the economic downturn at the end of the decade forced Smith & Waddington into liquidation in July 1930. Some fresh capital from Frank Waddington, however, allowed Russell to recommence operations as Waddington Body Company, Ltd. in 1931."

"The car pictured is a 20 HP Rolls-Royce chassis number, 42G1 which was the first of its model to arrive in Australia and is probably the oldest still extant. The car was originally owned by Mrs John Arnott and fitted with a Smith and Waddington 2 door saloon body. Following an accident in 1925 it was modified to four doors as shown. In 1937 it was sold and modernised by Properts. David Davis bought the car in 1959 and had it rebodied as a tourer in 1966. David still owns the car and it has reputedly covered over 1000,000 kilometers. The car is unique in that it has been surviced for most of its life by the Rolls-Royce Sydney agents and in particular, 3 generations of the Appleby Family who continue to maintain it. It is still fully registered and is used as a hobby car more particularly for longer distance holiday rallies."

Smith & Waddington has built at least bodies on Rolls-Royce, Wolseley, White, Talbot-Darracq, Essex, Fiat, Opel, Reo, Benz, Turcat-Méry, Renault, Minerva, Hudson, Dort, Buick, Mercedes, De Dion-Bouton, Peugeot, Oakland, Riley, DeSoto, Stutz, Crossley, Berliet, Chrysler, Studebaker, Erskine, Dodge, Sunbeam, Daimler, Ruggles, Zedel, Jewett, Willys-Knight, Flint, Rugby, Singer, Morris, Rover, Triumph, Chandler, Locomobile, Rochet-Schneider, Citroen, BSA, OM, Liberty, SCAT, Austro-Daimler, Moon, Vermorel, Lexington, Chenard-Walcker, Elcar, Star, Nash, Ford, Alfa Romeo, Lincoln, Paige, Hupmobile, Stoewer chassis.

The successor Waddington Body Works has built at least bodies on MG, Leyland, AEC, Mercedes-Benz, Dennis, Chevrolet, Ford, Hartnett, Albion, Bedford chassis.
