Post subject:  The Individual Designers

There were many designers who worked independantly and had their designs built by various coachbuilding companies or who started their careers employed by a coachbuilder and moved on from there.

Michelotti, for example, designed for Stabilimenti farina, later for his former colleague Vignale, Allemano and various other coachbuilders.
Eventually he started his own coachbuilding company.
And there was Virgil Exner, who frequently worked with Ghia, but also Sibona-Basano for example.
Another talented designer was Georges Paulin, who became house stylist of Pourtout. And let's not forget Raymond Loewy... or Giorgetto Giugiaro, Marcello Gandini, Jason Castriota, etcetera...

Please use this section to start topics about any (independant) designer who influenced car design in general and left his mark in automotive history.

Michelotti had been an independant designer for a long time, but eventually started his own coachbuilding company.
Therefore there now is a dedicated Michelotti forum: viewforum.php?f=108
The same goes for Giugiaro: viewforum.php?f=7

a complex family tree could be drawn with the headhunting and poaching between ateliers of what became the 'Big Three' then the marketing of a cult of personality, as in Harley Earl, Raymond Loewy and to some degree Exner Sr, etc. but i've been collecting some names lately, and thought these might jog some memories;
Gordon Miller Buehrig, E.T. (Bob) Gregorie, John Tjaarda (von Sterkenburg), Alexander Sarantos Tremulis, William Flajole, of course Albretch Graf Goertz, hell - Frank Kurtis even, and more recently; John de Lorean, Chip Foose maybe?

I'm not sure whether to include here Franco Sbarro and Leonardo Fioravanti?

Yes, this is the right place.

I met Franco Sbarro once in his place. Interesting guy, but also a very peculiar one.

Here's a William Flajole design from 1951 based on a Nash.

I am hoping for a thread on Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky.

He is credited with the 1934 Nash autos. A coupe is shown here.
