Cool car, conceived by Automobile Quarterly magazine.
Where is it now?

Given that the Bertone Mustang dates from 1965, it's a great example of how
the Concept or Dream Car directly influenced company showroom offerings,
in this case, the '67 Thunderbird; see it here, and here. I always wondered
where that wide-mouthed front end came from...
thanks for teaching us!

What do you mean exactly by "conceived by Automobile Quarterly magazine"?
Was it some kind of AQ contest or something?

Was AQ the father or the mother? I'd like to hear/read all about this love story then.

I would guess something's lost in the translation; the photos look like AQ pics,
so maybe it is covered in AQ? To my knowledge, they didn't have the budget
or the stature to go around commissioning one-off prototypes...
but I could be wrong.

ed.. the comeuppance follows, below...TG

Sorry for my terribly late reply to all.

Never the less this car really was commissioned by AQ and they featured its story in Volume 4, number 2 over a 12 page photographic report with another 4 pages interviewing Nuccio Bertone.

A quote: "First, we wanted to create something to please our readers. Second, we hoped to foment greater interest in the adventurous Gran Turismo configuration, whose origin is traceable also to Italy, circa 1926. What's more, we wanted to encourage European designers and coachmakers to introduce their latest styling concepts at future New York automobile shows."

The car was shown at the 1965 New York Auto Show, where it was awarded 'Best of Show'.

If you look closely you will notice the AQ logo just in front of the rear wheels.

It's a stunner.
But where is it now?

As they say here in the South, "Well hush my mouth!" (with lot's of nasality).
That would be a very interesting find, and I'll get a man right on it...
Thanks for the history lesson, too.
