Here's 1929 4.5 litre Bentley HB 3416 (reg. UU44) in 1961, as pictured in Hay's 'Bentley - The Vintage Years'. According to Hay, the saloon coachwork was by Vanden Plas.
The next photo shows the same, unaltered, body fitted (less happily) to my 1931 Rolls Royce 20/25, GOS68 (originally bodied by Crosbie and Dunn). The coachbuilder of the Bentley body is now quoted as Freestone and Webb on this and other websites, as well as on the RREC database. Over to you, experts!
Are there any other photos of HB 3416 with its original body out there?

The Vandenplas bodybook gives body 1586 on Bentley 4 1/2 litre HB3416 as a British flexible 4-door Saloon with reg. UU44, as supplied by VandenPlas on June 1929, so no doubt this was the first body on this chassis. All pics shown in the VDP book by Smith however show flexible saloons (lots of them and HB3416 may be among them albeit unidentified) with the doors opening from back to front, whereas this obviously does it the other way round. The reason was that the flexibility of the body on an enthusiastically driven car would lent itself more easily to err..flex, causing the door to open..
However, the original body later went to KL3528, and by 1938 this Bentley chassis had had a Cadogan Tourer fitted, which in turn was removed to be fitted with the body shown. So this is obviously not the original body. To me it very much looks like a Gurney Nutting body as they were the only coachbuilders who more frequently than others fitted the doors in the way shown. This is no more than a hunch, however.

Thanks for your input Rob. Hay's account of body changes on HB3416 and KL3582 is not easy to follow (for me!), and I'm now wondering where the 'Freestone & Webb' ID came from. Will try to follow up by posting some detail photos of the coachwork in the next couple of days, weather permitting! Mike

Update on coachwork changes: HB3416 & KL3582.

Having spent some time trawling through BDC Reviews, old copies of Motor Sport, etc., I can now present the evidence for coachwork changes to the two Bentleys in chronological form with proper references:
HB3416 (UU 44):
1929-1970: Original Vanden Plas body remained on HB3416 until sold by Antique Automobiles Ltd. of Peterborough in 1970 (Motor Sport , Feb. 1970 p.163; Photo below). Here described as 'Weymann' but obviously a generic title.
1970-present: Car rebuilt by Rusty Russ-Turner with supercharged engine and 2-seater Le Mans body from HB3402 (Hay, Vintage Years 2nd edition, 1997)
KL3582 (UW 2748):
1929-38: Original 4-door fabric saloon body by Harrison (details in VintageBentleys.org ; Photo in BDC Review 107, Feb. 1973 p.64).
1938-1971: Cadogan drophead coupe (Hay, 1997; Photo and owner's account in BDC Review 107, p.64).
1971- ealy 1990s: To quote the owner, in 1971, "...bought a V.D.P. body from Mr. Russ-Turner (originally on UU 44)..." (BDC Review 107, p.64; photo of KL3582 with this body in BDC Review 109, p.190).
Eary 1990s to present: HB3416 changed hands, and later converted to Le Mans replica (raced at Le Mans in 2006; photos on VintageBentleys.org).
2002-present: Saloon body (described as Vanden Plas in sales receipt) now fitted to 1931 Rolls-Royce 20/25, GOS68.

The 'Freestone & Webb' label appears to originate from an auction catalogue description when GOS68 was sold in June 2003, though here it is preceeded by "believed the work of..." - another case of auctioneer's limited research?
As to the doors opening the wrong way (for Vanden Plas), no doubt all coachbuilders made their recommendations to customers, but surely the customer had the final say in the matter?

1926 Bentley 6.5 Litre #TB2532 Vanden Plas three-quarter coupé finished in grey-wood grain.
Unfortunately it most likely had a short life while already in 1927 the gearbox was used in another chassis.
