Post and discuss all general info about Spohn here.
You may start new topics on specific cars, projects and makes designed and/or bodied by Spohn.

"Carosseriebau Hermann Spohn" was a German coachbuilder, founded in 1920 in Ravensburg. Around the same time Dr. Karl Maybach started manufacturing drivetrains and chassis for automobiles in Friedrichshafen, just about 20 km from Ravensburg. Spohn soon became Maybach's favored coachbuilder.

Besides Maybach, Spohn created bodies for other luxury brands like Hispano-Suiza, Cadillac, the Gaylord Project and Veritas sports cars.

Spohn closed down in 1957.

See "Spohn-Ford" sub forum for details of the illustrated car which is based on a 1940 Ford chassis and received custom coach work by Spohn in 1952 or '53.

Americar Australia #5 magazine, Feb. 20, 1990, article on page 39 regarding the '41 Packard custom by Spohn coach built for American Lieutenant Arthur Cooper. Car now receiving restoration work in Aussie.
My scan of the full one page article is too large to post.
I am in contact with the current AU owner who has owned the car approx. 25 years having purchased it from another Australian. Prior to that it had been near Kaufman, Texas.

US Motor Trend magazine of November 1953 has a comprehensive six page article on "The Saga of Spohn" with many excellent photos.
My scans are too large to add here. Message me if you want them.

I am working on a Spohn Die Valkyrie, and I am looking to find a source for these parts. Anybody know who made the interior door handle and/or the hardtop latch here:

https://plus.google.com/photos/10811745 ... 9?hl=en_US

They are both very fancy, and I don't believe they are Cadillac, Mercedes, or Porsche. Any ideas?

Oh yes, you're right. The Maybach-book told me, that it is Gläser. But it's really the same than the car on the ad.
I'll delete it in the Gläser section.

Thank you!
Tommy

Spohn unknown. This was constructed on the base of a damaged American car (Packard), very soon after the the end of the war. Anybody knows what is lurking behind this monstrocity?

I have not seen this "Luxury Coachbuilding" logo elsewhere for Spohn. It is found in the Gerhard Schrader book, p. 144.

The 1940 Ford-based, 1952 Spohn-built Custom is on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California from February 23, 2013 through February 4, 2014. It is featured in their FINS exhibit in the Grand Salon room. The car is in unrestored condition. 14 vehicles are in the exhibit. Owner's voices at each station tell the story of each car as well as appropriate individual and subject signage.

The 2013 Amelia Island, S. Carolina, Concours d'Elegance has taken place this weekend. Two Spohn Customs participated. Believed to be the first time Spohn Customs have participated in concours. The red car is a pre-war Ford chassis owned by Wayne Carini and is an older restoration. The white car is a '49 Veritas chassis owned by Dale Walksler. Photo by Geoff Hacker.
