Let's start by a beautiful one.
In the mid-sixties, the Volvo board thought about a new flagship, with this up-market coupé based on the future six cylinder 164. A full-scale mock was built in 1966. As you can see, the lines were very clean, and anticipated by a full five years the Pininfarina Fiat 130 coupé !
Unfortunately, the project was shelved in 1967, probably because the cost of the panelling of the production version was estimated too high. What a shame…

In the mid-seventies, the question of a flagship for the six-cylinder 264 range was still on the mind of Volvo's board.
Jan Wilsgaard, Volvo's in-house stylist, created this coupé, on the basis of the current saloon line, for cost reasons. Of course, the result was less elegant than the P 172…
The prototype was built by Coggiola, using a 164 body, including the front end.
Of course, the production version, built by Bertone, used the 264 front end, with the rectangular headlamps.

And now, a really ugly one : this 263, with a fastback body. Inspired by the Saab 900 ?

Two prototypes of the fifties :
1- The Philip, a large saloon, with a very strong american influence, mostly from the Kaiser Manhattan,
2- The P 179 "Margaret Rose", intended as a replacement for the PV 444.
Both were styled by Jan Wilsgaard, in-house chief stylist

And a spectacular one in the thirties : the Venus Bilo, presented in 1933. With full length fenders, not unlike the Spohn Maybach Zeppelin, presented one year earlier. Too radical. Volvo studied another model, the Carioca, this time inspired by the Chrysler Airflow…

Sketch of the P172. It is a good looking design, shame it never went past mockup stage.
