Vittorio Viotti and his partner, Mr. Tolfo, opened a small coachbuilding workshop in Turin via Petitti 9, in 1921. For ten years, Viotti & Tolfo remained a small company, with perhaps a dozen workers, but won a reputation for quality coachwork and developed good customers especially with those for Fiat 525 and Lancia Dilambda.
An unusual commision was a tourer on a 3-litre Bentley chassis in about 1928.
In 1931 the company moved in a shed in corso Stupinigi and changed as "Carrozzeria Viotti SA". The auto industry now became aware of Viotti in a big way, and Fiat contracted for large numbers of Viotti's creations on the Balilla chassis. From 1933 to 1939 several thousand 508A, B and C chassis were equipped with Viotti bodywork.
Starting in 1933, Viotti also had a real production line making sports bodies on chassis such as the Lancia Augusta and Artena, Fiat Ardita and 6C 1500. An industrial link came into being with Maggiora, who supplied steel pressings in important numbers and also made up sub-assemblies for Viotti. From 1934 to 1938 Viotti's chief styling consultant was Mario Revelli di Beaumont. In 1939 Viotti had a commission from the italian Government to prepare 251 Lancia Aprilia coloniale for the Armed forces, and to convert several Lancia Artena in ambulances and special vehicles.The factory was destroyed in air raids over Turin in 1943 and rebuilt after the war in corso Bramante. In 1946 Viotti introduced a wood-panelled station wagon on the fiat 1100 chassis.This car was called "giardiniera" and the name was patented. Viotti also modernized the Fiat 1500 saloon according to the latest american styling trends.When Fiat brought out the 1400 in 1950, Viotti immediately used its platforms for a wood-panel station wagon and a 2-door cabriolet. He did the same with the Lancia Aurelia B53 and Fiat 1900. For several years Viotti drew more than two-thirds of his business from station wagons, "giardiniere" and "giardinette metalliche", and the rest mainly from convertibles. Vittorio Viotti died for a cancer in 1956. For some years the company continued a successful collaboration with Fiat, especially for the model 600 and Lancia with the Appia, but in the early '60s began its rapid decadent dish, which culminated with the closing, which occurred in 1964 although in recent years had also enjoyed the collaboration of Pietro Frua.
