Villa d'Este, 1947: a unknown mr. Basso exhibited a beautiful special spyder, based an Aprilia chassis and bodied by Ghia, and won the first prize in its category. For the records, an Astura S.Farina won the coppa d'oro.
But who was this mr. Basso came out from nowhere? Giovanni Basso was one of the most eclectic person in the Turin motorcars world. After the WWII he opened a workshop in via Modena 21 to build racing cars from zero.
He bought by auction a large quantity of alloy tubes dismissed by Fiat aeronautical plant, after the 1944 bombing. Then he gained several patents on the Lancia 1500 engine, the best engine for the sport cars in that age. The first race cars had a twin cam 1500cc engine with dry oil-sump, nobody have seen an engine like that before, tubular chassis and an aluminium body by Rocco Motto, his close friend. Basso won the 1947 Sanremo-Poggio dei Fiori with an enormous advantage on the others competitors. So the succes and the orders arrived. Basso built many sport cars, based on Aprilia engine and bodied by Motto, until 1954. This is the last one Aprilia, called "G.B. special", he drove it in the last race (b&w photo) in 1956. Basso keeped it in his garage until he died, in 1984.

Nice car! :good:

Quite a similar front end treatment as Motto's Ferrari 166 Spyder #002C: http://www.coachbuild.com/index.php?opt ... emId=38415

Yes, this Aprilia was built in 1952. The Ferraris had a shorter chassis, but the "concept" is the same: a barchetta with low shape, big grill, several air intakes and the round rear. Motto knew very well the main problem of the barchetta's body: the wristing rigidity. You know, many barchettas had a tubular chassis, so to hold the body rigidity he cutted just a little door on the sides. I think this Aprilia is the last evolution of the Motto's idea and we can recognize many Vignale's details too.
