Great! I thought you said you had backed out on that one. So you're going through with it?

Chassis # 103 046

Gooding & Co. wrote:
According to the Maserati Historic Services in Modena, this 5000 GT chassis, 103 046, was completed at the factory on August 24th, 1962. Constructed with the rare 5-speed ZF transmission, 4-wheel disc brakes and air conditioning (the only 5000 GT to have been originally installed with such a system,) this Maserati benefited from the most desirable combination of components in contrast with the earlier cars that were equipped with four-speed gearboxes and inferior brakes.

All 34 5000 GTs carried custom coachwork by Italy’s finest coachbuilders: Frua, Touring, Pinin Farina and Bertone were among those to fashion bodies for the remarkable chassis. However, Allemano, a small coachbuilder with a long association with Maserati, fashioned, what many consider the most elegant and coherent design of all – one which suited the car’s aggressive performance and air of exclusivity. The design was penned by one of the greats of Italian design, Giovanni Michelotti, and his characteristic touch shows through in the crisp lines, long overhangs and thoughtfully executed details.

One of 22 such examples bodied by Allemano, this 5000 GT is recorded as having been originally finished in the same livery as it sports today – Blu Sera Metallic with a white Connolly leather interior that is a fashionable combination quite fitting for the era.

The Maserati was originally delivered to Sig. Piero Maria Merli Brandini of Rome, Italy, however little information exists regarding the car during its earliest years Europe. Eventually, the Maserati was exported to Venezuela, where it remained until its fortuitous rescue. In the early 1990s, a diamond merchant from Antwerp was visiting the country and came across a gem of an entirely different sort – a 5000 GT in complete and unmodified condition. It was a true diamond in the rough and the ideal foundation for a comprehensive restoration project. Once purchased, the Maserati was shipped to Belgium and a complete, ground-up restoration was immediately commissioned.

All the mechanical work was performed by Bill McGrath Maserati in the UK, one of the foremost European specialists dealing with classic Maseratis. It has been reported that the entire engine, rear axle, Lucas fuel injection system, braking system, suspension, steering and air conditioning were all carefully rebuilt to factory specifications during that time. Additionally, an NOS stainless steel exhaust was fitted and a new wiring loom was installed.

Cosmetically, the bodywork was stripped to the bare metal and repainted in the original factory color, and the interior was meticulously re-trimmed in the correct white leather, just as when new. The restoration was finally completed in 2003 almost a decade after the initial work began. Since that time the car has been used sparingly and, most recently, this sensational Maserati has been in the care of a true enthusiast who has enjoyed it thoroughly and performed maintenance as needed. In January 2010, this handsome brute captured a class win at the La Jolla Motor Car Classic, a proud testament to its superb condition, importance and appeal.

Just a couple of pics of chassis # 103*058, perhaps the most powerful of the series, sold new to Sr. Bascones, the former president of the Antic Car Club of Catalunya. (copyright: Galerie des Damiers)
