Maserati Quattroporte 4200 Sports Saloon 1967

Coachwork by Carrozzeria Frua

Chassis no. AM107/1458

•Delivered new in Rome, Italy

•One owner from new

•Manual transmission

•Original colour scheme

Styled by Frua and introduced in 1963, the V8-powered Quattroporte was a landmark model for Maserati, being the Modena firm's first four-door saloon and its first car of unitary construction. Styled by Frua and introduced at the 1963 Turin Show, the Quattroporte was powered by a downsized - to 4.2 litres - version of the 5000 GT's four-cam V8 and beneath the skin featured independent front suspension and a De Dion rear axle, though the latter was replaced by a conventional elliptically sprung live axle in 1967. Car & Driver recorded a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) time of 8.7 seconds and wound their Quattroporte up to 120mph (193km/h), estimating that there was another 10mph (16km/h) still to come, all of which was some going for a fully-equipped four-seater weighing close to 2 tons.

One of the world's fastest luxury saloons of its day, this first-generation Quattroporte was delivered in 1967 to its first and only owner, a member of the legal profession, in the Italian capital, Rome. The Quattroporte joined his stable of a Maserati Ghibli and Rolls-Royce, and could often be seen on the Via Veneto. Offered with Italian registration papers, it is described as highly original, benefiting from a repaint in its original silver colour a few years ago, while the blue leather interior has aged very well and possesses a delightful patina. Rarely do these stylish sports saloons come to the market with such provenance.

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them. Congratulations on an excellent website.
