Pininfarina Chevrolet Corvair 1963
Pininfarina Chevrolet Corvair 1963
5.5/10 rating (2 votes)

Description

This is an extremely unusual car and a one-off Chevrolet Corvair, designed by Tom Tjaarda.

In 1960, Pininfarina put forward a project of their own providing the attractive, if controversial, rear engine corvair chassis with a body.
This version was the first of two chassis to be bodied by Pininfarina in the course of the following three years.
The first version being shown at the Paris and Turin salons in 1960.
Two years later, at the Paris salon, the chassis was shown again, this time a little less radical, but a more convincing project that involved a lot of work.
Finally, the example shown here was probably the most successful of the group.
By 1963, it managed to be a four seater or at least a 2 + 2 and remains forever, as so much of Pininfarina's work, "variations on a theme".
The car features Pininfarina's first introduction of a head light design that they called 'oriental eyes'.
Tom Tjaarda later used a similar type of lights on his design for the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Series 1.

This car was at the Pininfarina museum for many years and eventually made its way to the US.

TESTIMONIALS

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them. Congratulations on an excellent website.
