The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I was built between 1955 and 1959 in a number of 2360, of which 122 were long wheelbase models, which came available in 1957. A number of 121 short wheelbase chassis were fitted with special coachbuilt bodies and of the long wheelbase version only 36 received a special body by one of the coachbuilders around. The Silver Cloud "Empress" examples in this gallery are some of those rare long wheelbase coachbuilt versions.
The Empress Line is a later variation of Hooper's "New Look" theme, created by chief designer Osmond Rivers. He originally designed this type of body style on the Daimler "Empress" and over the years it became almost common to talk about "Empress Line" as regard to this special design, also when applied to other cars than Daimlers. Hooper themselves never mentioned the term "Empress" when they applied similar coachworks onto non-Daimler chassis.
In the fifties and onwards, Special Coachbuilding became too expensive compared to the series produced Standard Steel models and as a result only 18 examples of the Silver Cloud I Empress LWB were made and it is one of the last creations (design #8504) made by Hooper before they ceased coachbuilding in 1959.
I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
