This '13 Rolls-Royce 40/50HP Silver Ghost, chassis #2517, was custom fitted by H.J. Mulliner with a custom six-seater Torpedo body on commission by the Ruler of Patiala, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh.
The Maharaja was a favored client of Rolls-Royce. When he was given the opportunity to order the first Rolls-Royce Twenty, he did not order just one, but a whole fleet. For some reason, during the 1930s, Rolls-Royce didn't accept any orders from the Maharaja. When affronted by the factory's inattention, the Maharaja's pride was hurt and he condemned his entire fleet of Rolls-Royce automobiles to haul garbage in Patiala City. He recalled his Rolls-Royces from civil duties after Rolls-Royce relented.
Rolls-Royce #2517 with London-to-Edinburgh Tourer coachwork was bought by Richard Solove in India, in 1985. It was brought to running and driving condition, and driven across Patiala and Pakistan to Karachi. Upon arrival, it was sent to Jonathan Harley's shop in Great Britain, where a four-year restoration was performed. In 2007 it was auctioned by Gooding & Company for $1,870,000 including buyer's premium. In 2010, the car came available to the market again, now by RM Auctions.
I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
Congratulations on an excellent website.
