Description

Louis Delage began his automotive career as an engineer at Peugeot in 1903. He launched his own company just two years later. From the beginning, Delage was one of the world's front-running marques, with Grand Prix and Indianapolis racing successes and equally known for its excellent grand tourers.

In 1921, the Delage road car line included the newly-introduced GL, essentially a revision of the prior CO, which was fitted with a number of sporting and skiff-type bodies by multiple coachbuilders and developed into the single overhead cam GL S and the dual overhead cam GL GS. In addition, Delage produced over 13,000 four-cylinder cars in the DO, DE and DI series during the 1920s, as well as just 1,540 six-cylinder CO models, followed by the DM-DR models of 1926, the last of which were the DMN, of which just 897 examples were produced.

The car in this gallery is such a DMN model. Chassis 31453 was fitted with faux cabriolet coachwork by Figoni in December 1929 and delivered to Smith's Garage in London, England. Its first owner was M.O. Wetter, a Belgian diplomat. In the 1960s, Sir Peter Graham purchased, restored and retained it for many years before a Belgian collector acquired #31453 in 1993, freshening its restoration, touring, and displaying it during his tenure. It was acquired by the O'Quinn Collection in 2007 and used little since then. The car came to the market in 2010 when the entire O'Quinn collection was sold off.

TESTIMONIALS

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them. Congratulations on an excellent website.
