The ‘shooting brake’ body style is typically described as a sleek wagon with two doors and sports-car panache, its image entangled with European aristocracy, fox hunts and baying hounds. With a handful of great examples created in the past, the rare ‘shooting brake’ body style is showing signs of a renaissance as car manufacturers seek to (re)invent new kinds of vehicles for passionate drivers constantly on the hunt for the next new thing, with functionality tailored to specific lifestyle use. The SHOOTING BRAKES ARCHIVE tries to provide a complete as possible overview of the most important shooting brake models created until present day.

Proper transport for the hunt

The term "shooting brake" comes from turn-of-the-century England, where it referred to a car used to transport a hunting party and its gear. "Brake" referred to a chassis that was used to break in horses. In fact, early safari vehicles (which served much the same purpose) were also referred to as ‘shooting brakes.’ It eventually just came to refer to early wagons in general.

Downton Abbey shooting party

In the latter half of the 20th century, automakers were looking at a way to distinguish new cars like the Volvo 1800ES and the Reliant Scimitar GTE from larger five-door wagons and boxier hatchbacks. Looking back at the old school shooting brakes they noticed that the originals all only had two doors. Thus was the modern idea of a shooting brake born as a low, sleek two-door wagon.

Where the original vehicular shooting brakes were motorized wagons that had been customized and altered specifically for the purposes of sportsmen and hunters, the vehicles became more refined and hunting declined, the term was thereby applied to custom-built luxury estate cars (usually based on coupés).

If you look up ‘shooting brake’ in the dictionary, it is literally defined as a “station wagon” or “estate car”. So, how does one tell the difference? Some might say that station wagons are 4-door whereas shooting brakes feature 2, but there are plenty of cars over the years called ‘shooting brakes’ that have 4-doors. Also, station wagons are typically more boxy and family-friendly than shooting brakes. And while that’s generally true and shooting brakes are often much more sleek and sport-focused, it’s not carved in stone as fact. However, in order to prevent a further marketing frenzy, Coachbuild.com sticks to the definition of “2-door models” as true ‘shooting brakes’.

Very few shooting brakes have been created in history, the most famous ones being designed by amongst others Bertone, Drogo, Pininfarina, Touring, Vignale and Zagato, fitting their custom two-door bodies to the chassis of pedigreed cars from e.g. Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar, Ferrari and Rolls- Royce. See all coachbuilt shooting brakes in our ENCYCLOPEDIA, MARKETPLACE and FORUM.

A coupé wouldn't do the job

As the rakish ‘shooting brake’ shape has intrigued manufacturers, coachbuilders and customers alike for years, the cars that have been built or converted have varying levels of success. The listing below provides an overview of all efforts we were able to trace, showing series produced models, limited series and one-offs, manufactured either by the respective car brands themselves, by coachbuilders or by specialist conversion companies. And yes, though 4-door variants don’t qualify as ‘shooting brakes’ we included (at the bottom) some 4-door models for those who favour a more liberal definition.

We spotted several other ‘shooting brake’ curiosities (Pagani Huayra Shooting Brake!) of questionable status or just being fantasy renderings; we omitted these. However if you feel we should add a model to the list, mail us or add/upload your suggestions to the “SHOOTING BRAKES” section in our FORUM!

THE 4-DOOR MODELS
(not qualifying as genuine "shooting brake")

Though 4-door variants strictly don’t qualify as ‘shooting brakes’ we include below some 4-door models for those who favour a more liberal definition of a 'shooting brake'. Some manufacturers of modern 4-door cars refer explicitly to their model as "Shooting Brake" while they just seem to try riding the popular 'shooting brake' commercial wave. We refuse to join this marketing frenzy so those models are not listed below. However, some 4-door designs come close to the styling objectives of a true 'shooting brake' or were designed in the true shooting brake spirit. They deserve to be mentioned below.

TESTIMONIALS

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them. Congratulations on an excellent website.
