B45AE, 1934 Bentley 3 1/2 litre Saloon with division, for H.R.H. the Duke of Kent, as a personal car. The division made for very cramped rear quarters, but the royal duke ordered another car on the same lines B142HK in 1936 together with a Phantom III, also by Barker, also as a private car. The 3 1/2 litre was traded in and sold, while the division was at one time removed.

It is the same car, in later life, when both the division as well as part of the wings had been rmoved by later owners.

Survived for many years with John Donner, a RREC stalwart, who had a particular affection for the car as the original owner was his grandfather (or something like that).

A one-time owner of this car told me in the 1970s that the wing modifications were actually carried out by Barker (possibly Hooper by then) themselves.

Clive.

Well, one obviously had a man to do those sort of things, and then one might as well have a proper coachbuilder do it, eh?

Oh, I don't know - if one had to get one's motor second-hand from HRH I suppose one might have to get the tin-snips out for a bit of surgery. =) In fact, I think that the modifications are quite tasteful and so it is nice to think that the car is still "Barker". Overall I would say it is a very successful attempt at fitting a particular body style on to a smaller than might be expected chassis.

Clive.
