What most people don't know about the Scaglietti Corvette's is that they were Carroll Shelby's first attempt at a production vehicle and were essentially the prototype to the Cobra. Shelby's idea of mating a lightweight alloy European body with a strong and durable American powerplant started with these 3 cars and Chevrolet. It was only after GM killed the project (due to the AMA racing ban) that Shelby moved on to Ford...and the rest is history!

The only car completed by Scaglietti is the #1 car, which is currently red with the Corvette Grill. Shelby kept the Corvette grill on the car because he knew he would need Chevy/GM support to meet the 100 car homologation requirements and wanted people to know it was a Corvette to appease GM and Chevy brass that may have been concerned about competition from his new car. It didn't matter in the end as GM execs cancelled the project due to the racing ban.
