MASERATI MISTRAL COUPE 3700 1965

Description

MODEL HISTORY

In 1964, Maserati launched the successor to the 3500GT, a sports car named for the famously cold, Southern French wind that comes from the north, Le Mistral, which was a name that also sought to express the speed at which the car could move. The idea for the project’s name – which had previously been dubbed 'Due Posti' (two places) - came from the French Maserati importer. The design meanwhile came from the Italian designer, Frua, and was widely deemed to be the most beautiful creation ever seen. Technologically, the car was mighty impressive, owing to the motorization and use of the reliable German ZF gearbox. The six-cylinder, double-ignition engine was a direct descendent of the winning engines used in Formula-1 cars. The Mistral is equipped with Lucas mechanical injection, and with 830 Coupes sold, she was a welcome new star for Maserati, which wanted to become a successful street car manufacturer in the premium segment. This particular model - number 386 - was sold new to a wealthy Portuguese gentleman who owned the car until recently, the Mistral part of his very impressive collection for more than 25 years. A southern European scout put us in touch with the now aged owner and he eventually agreed to sell us one of his beloved cars, which he no longer had the vigor to drive. Hence, now is the time for a new man to enthusiastically take over the wheel of this prestigious, beautifully appointed and color-schemed GT. Art on wheels.

EQUIPMENT

At the time, a Mistral came replete with the finest, softest leather money could buy. The now priceless Borrani spoked wheels were also included in the purchase price. Those days are surely gone for good now.

EXTERIOR

This is a Mistral from before 1967, when Maserati switched to a steel body, from the previously used aluminum. Owing to the fine care, and obviously always having been garaged in the dry Portuguese air, she has never known corrosion. The bottom is unwelded. The body was professionally repainted once in original color, for cosmetic reasons only, on a hard tight body with perfectly symmetrical lines. The chrome all round is of the highest quality, with beautifully deep shine. This Mistral – in the most desirable color combination – is stunning.

INTERIOR

Beautifully original interior. About ten year ago the seats were reupholstered, in the original shape and color. The floor carpeting, door panels and dashboard are all original and in remarkably beautiful condition. No signs of wear found anywhere. The spectacular dashboard with classic Jaeger dials is wholly original and undamaged. Everything works properly.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT, TRUNK SPACE, WHEELS & TIRES

The engine compartment, like the engine itself, is completely original, and that is truly remarkable. A 'matching' engine, expertly maintained by specialists, that runs beautifully, with excellent oil pressure, no strange noises nor smoke. In the back all is original and pristine, clean and flawless. The original Borrani spoked rims are spectacular, retaining a fine deep shine. Proper Michelin tires all around.

HISTORY FILE

This Maserati Mistral was built in 1965, a model from the first series with an aluminum body, and was shipped directly to Portugal from the factory in Modena, where she would remain for her entire life. The car remained in the collection of two famous Maserati owners for many years and therefore would be a welcome guest at competitions and events. Recently, thanks to good relationships in the right circles of Portugal’s high-class classic car world, the now aged owner agreed to sell her to us, and has now happily found her way to Warmond, where you can come admire her in all her glory. A true beauty.

TESTIMONIALS

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them. Congratulations on an excellent website.
