FOOTNOTES

The FIAT 1500 was an all-new design that was first shown to the public at the Milan Motor Show in November 1935. Automotive engineers had begun to pay greater attention to aerodynamic considerations and the 1500 was an outstanding example of this newly acquired knowledge applied to passenger car design. Developed in a wind tunnel, the 1500's striking-looking body featured a raked back radiator grille intended to reduce aerodynamic drag, though this would be replaced by a more conventional, upright grille in 1940, no doubt at the dictates of fashion. Beneath the skin there was a tubular backbone chassis boasting independent front suspension, the latter making its first appearance on a FIAT car. The 1500's engine was a 1,493cc overhead-valve six that produced a maximum of 45bhp, which was transmitted to the rear wheels via a four-speed gearbox. Top speed was in the region of 113km/h. FIAT offered open models as well as the standard saloon, and the 1500 chassis was popular with independent coachbuilders such as Carrozzeria Viotti, as seen here.

First registered in Florence, and from 1950 in Lucca, this most elegant car has belonged to the current vendor's family since 1982. Finished in Burgundy with beige fabric cloth interior, it is an older restoration (believed 1980s), recently carefully re-commissioned to bring it to running condition while preserving its originality. The car is offered with the original Italian libretto and Foglio Complimentare, documenting its history from new.

1937 FIAT 1500 Cabriolet

Carrozzeria della Carrozzeria Viotti

Telaio nr. 017.666

• Prima immatricolazione a Firenze

TESTIMONIALS

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them. Congratulations on an excellent website.
