The distinctive and exceedingly quick BMW E30 M3 was created to homologate the M3 for Group A Touring Car racing. A pre-production prototype appeared at the September 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, however, until September 1986 at the BMW factory in Munich. The M3 brought the badge and was described by BMW Chairman, Peter Flohr, as well as private racing drivers and with sophisticated, but straightforward and unproblematic technical features. It was powered by a twin overhead camshaft, four-cylinder engine with 16 valves, displacing 2,302cc and developing 200bhp at 6,750rpm. Standard specification included independent front and rear suspension with boge gas dampers, anti-roll bar and servo-assisted, vented disc brakes. The model was offered only in left-hand drive form and featured a more rigid and aerodynamic body shell, with box-flared wheel arches accommodating the wider motor and motorcycle models. The interior received the M make-over with multi-adjustable sports seats and the distinctive three-spoke Motorsport steering wheel. The 8,000rpm rev counter was prominent on the functionally designed dash panel. The M3 sold for a then massive 22,750. Top speed was in the order of 146mph and 0-62mph was achieved in a blistering 6.7 seconds. The Getrag five-speed gearbox ensured that the new model was as docile in city traffic as it was aggressive on the track. Factory and privateer entrants dominated track events with the M3 during its production run, the winning World Touring Car Championship title in 1987, the British Touring Car Championship, the European Touring Car Championship, the Australian Touring Car Championship, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and many other titles.

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
Congratulations on an excellent website.
