The Maserati A6G2000 was a road going version of the competition A6GCS. The car was also simply referred to as the Maserati 2000 GT. The 2000cc A6GCS inline-six engine was detuned by Vittorio Bellentani to provide a better power curve and a normal wet-sump lubrication system was fitted. Bellantini's task was to produce a reliable unit which could easily be modified for competition use, so a twin-spark cylinder head was offered as an option. In this configuration the maximum output was about 150 horsepower. The chassis was constructed by renowned chassis builder Gilco who also built the chassis for a.o. Ferrari. The A6G2000 was produced between 1954 and 1957. During that period sixty examples were created.
Maserati chose to outsource the bodywork. No two cars were alike and each reflected the first customer's design preference. All the cars were sold as bare chassis to be fitted with bodies from Allemano, Frua and Vignale. The most celebrated versions were built by Zagato. Zagato's treatment of the Maserati chassis was similar to the Fiat 8V coachwork from 1954 which was sculpted out of aluminum into a flowing shape. A total of 19 Zagato Coupes were built. Some Zagato-bodied models used the special competition cylinder heads. Several were used in GT racing throughout Italy from 1955 to 1957 and this model eventually won GT class in the 1956 Italian championships which had previously been dominated by the powerful Fiats 8V, also with bodies by Zagato.
The twenty one chassis have been broken down into four series:
- Prototype and first series: 2101, 2102, 2105, 2106, 2107
- Interim series: 2112, 2113, 2118/2188
- Second Series: 2121, 2122, 2123, 2138
- Third series: 2124, 2137, 2139, 2148, 2150, 2155, 2160, 2179, 2186

I am not a natural flatterer, I like to think that I "tell it like it is", politely I hope. So when I tell you that I am very impressed by the contents of your website, it is just not English politeness. I of course love the subject matter but you deal with it in an energetic and respectful manner. I am overwhelmed by the research that has gone into compiling the list of coachbuilders/bodybuilders for Europe and North America. I have never heard of the vast majority of them.
